Prep Zone Power Poll – 2012 Softball Final

Gainesville – Following their first state softball title in school history, the Lafayette (Mayo) Hornets also finished on top of the final softball Prep Zone Power Poll.

The Hornets (25-4) climbed seven spots to No. 1 following a 4-0 record in the playoffs that included a win over #7 Union County (Lake Butler) in the Class 1A state semifinals. They then defeated Jay, 12-9, in the state championship game.

Bishop Snyder (Jacksonville) is ranked second. The Cardinals (25-6) went 4-1 in the postseason and finished as Class 3A runners-up after falling to American Heritage (Delray Beach), 3-0, in the state championship game.

Ponte Vedra also earned a trip to Clermont. The Sharks (23-6) lost to #5 Belleview, 6-4, in the Class 5A state semifinals and finished third in the poll.

The Mustangs of Mandarin (Jacksonville) (25-6), who lost to eventual 8A state champion Durant (Plant City) in the state semifinals, is ranked fourth ahead of the Rattlers. Belleview (20-9) was ranked 20th in the polls prior to the start of the postseason. However, they defeated the Nos. 1 (Creekside), 2 (North Marion), 3 (Ponte Vedra) and 12 (Tavares) teams and moved up 15 spots to round out the top five.

Keystone Heights (19-8), which won a slow pitch state title in 1989, won 10 in a row and 17 of 18 to advance to their first final four since 1995. The Indians (19-8) lost to Florida High (Tallahassee), 1-0, in the Class 3A state semifinals and finished sixth in the poll.

Union County (18-7) is ranked seventh, followed by North Marion (Citra) (25-3), Creekside (St. Johns (23-4) and PK Yonge (Gainesville) (19-9) in the top 10.

The Prep Zone Power Poll ranks the top 20 high school football, basketball, baseball and softball teams (regardless of classification) across 26 counties in north Florida (Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Citrus, Clay, Columbia, Dixie, Duval, Flagler, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Hernando, Jefferson, Lafayette, Lake, Levy, Madison, Marion, Nassau, Putnam, Sumter, St. Johns, Suwannee, Taylor, Union & Volusia counties). It only considers schools that are eligible for state championships. It is voted on weekly by sportswriters and sportscasters.
