Sonic Drive-In Player-of-the-Game for Feb. 20 – Jarvy Gainey (Eastside)

The Sonic Drive-In Player-of-the-Game for Thursday, Feb. 20, was Jarvy Gainey of the Eastside (Gainesville) boys’ basketball team.

Gainey led all scorers with 25 points as Eastside defeated visiting Eustis, 62-51, in a Class 4A-Region 2 Quarterfinal (WATCH REPLAY).

The junior started slow but he finished strong by scoring 22 points in the second half.

“We had to fight for that one in the second half,” said Eastside coach Pop Williams.  “We kind of changed the game plan (in the 2nd half) because we weren’t hitting that many jump shots, so we tried to get to the basket and we did a good job of that in the third and fourth quarters.”

Gainey was particularly good at the free throw line, knocking down 15-of-20 from the charity stripe.

He was 10-of-13 from the line in the final quarter as the Rams, who only led by one at the end of the third quarter, 37-36, outscored the Panthers 25-15 in the fourth quarter.

Gainey scored 14 points in the final quarter and almost single-handily outscored Eustis.

“That’s why we wanted him with the ball,” said Williams.  “He was either going to get fouled or get to the basket, and then you’ve got somebody you’re going to get your points from.”

Eastside also got 18 points from senior K.J. Bradley, who was 4-for-6 from the line, and 11 from junior Aziel “Ike” Gainey as the Rams (21-7) won their 11th straight game.

Senior Bradley Douglas led the Panthers (15-12) with 16.

The Rams will travel to The Villages on Tuesday night.  The Buffalo (21-6) eliminated North Marion (Citra), 58-50.

“We’ll know something about them on Saturday,” said Williams.  “We’re going to work on some stuff that we need to tomorrow (Friday) and then get ready for Saturday.”

Every game The Prep Zone will recognize a Player-of-the-Game. The recipient receives a $10 gift certificate courtesy of Sonic Drive-In of Gainesville & Ocala.

The Prep Zone Power Poll powered by Anytime Fitness – 2019-20 Boys Basketball Poll #5

Paxon (Jacksonville) remains on top of the all-classification regional rankings as FHSAA state playoffs begin

GAINESVILLE– The second season began last week in boys high school basketball as district tournament play dominated The Prep Zone Power Poll area.

Most of the top 10 teams dominated their respective tournaments, and for that reason the top nine teams remain exactly the same.

Paxon (Jacksonville) knocked off Ed White (Jacksonville), 63-51, to clinch the District 3-4A title. That, and the Gateway Conference title, kept the Golden Eagles on top of the poll this week as the received five of the eight first-place votes.

Paxon (22-5) opens up play tonight in a Region 1-4A quarterfinal game against Pensacola.

Andrew Jackson (Jacksonville) just missed out on returning to the top spot it held in the first three polls as the Tigers (21-3) received the other three first-place votes.

Jackson edged #7 Providence (Jacksonville), 31-29, in a defensive slugfest to win the District 2-3A title.

The Tigers, who were the 5A state runners-up in 2019, open up the 3A state playoffs tonight against Maclay (Tallahassee).

Columbia (Lake City) remains 3rd after capturing the District 2-6A title with a 49-45 win over Lincoln (Tallahassee).

The Tigers (25-2) open up in the state playoffs tonight in a Region 1-6A quarterfinal against Chiles (Tallahassee), who they beat last week in the district tourney semifinals.

Staying 4th is Robert E. Lee (Jacksonville).

The Generals (21-4) won the District 3-5A title by beating Westside (Jacksonville), 76-64, last Friday night.

Lee opens up the 5A playoffs tonight against Pine Forest (Pensacola).
Rounding out the top five is North Florida Educational Institute (Jacksonville).

The Eagles (22-4) remain 5th after routing #14 Impact Christian (Jacksonville) by 22 points in the District 4-2A championship game last week.

NFEI opens up in 2A regional play against Beaches Chapel (Jacksonville) tonight.

Bishop Kenny leads off the second five as the Crusaders captured the District 4-4A championship with a 46-42 triumph over #11 Palatka. This avenged a loss at the buzzer for the Crusaders (22-4) against the Panthers (19-7) during the regular season.

Now due to the new FHSAA playoff seeding system, the two teams will play again tonight in a Region 1-4A quarterfinal matchup at Bishop Kenny.

Providence remains 7th despite the loss to Andrew Jackson in the District 2-3A title game.

The Stallions (18-9) will play at P.K. Yonge (Gainesville) for the third year in a row tonight in a Region 1-3A quarterfinal game.

The 8th-ranked team in the all-classification regional rankings is the top-ranked team in 1A according to Max Preps, Wildwood.

The Wildcats (20-7) crushed Crescent City and Pahokee to win the District 8-1A title and opens up regional play in 1A at home tonight against Williston.

The Villages remains 9th as they also won their district title.

The Buffalo (20-6) won the District 6-4A championship by beating Central (Brooksville), 71-54, and start play in the 4A playoffs tonight against North Marion (Citra).

Rounding out the top 10 is another district champion, Fleming Island (Orange Park).

The Golden Eagles (19-8) moved up four spots from 14th after beating First Coast (Jacksonville), 68-62, to capture the District 3-6A crown.

Fleming Island hosts Tate (Cantonment) tonight in Region 1-6A quarterfinal action.

Mount Dora Christian Academy dropped from 10th in the previous poll to 13th this week after suffering its first loss of the season, 54-49, to Central Florida Christian Academy (Ocoee) in the District 10-2A championship game.

Despite the loss, the Bulldogs (26-1) are on the road tonight at Florida Prep (Melbourne) in a Region 3-2A quarterfinal game.

Mainland (Daytona Beach) is the only team new to the poll this week at #17.
The Bucs (17-10) replace Forest (Ocala), who Mainland beat 69-38 in the District 4-6A championship last week.

The two teams will play again tonight in a 6A opening round game.

The Prep Zone Power Poll ranks the top 20 high school football, basketball, baseball & softball teams (regardless of FHSAA classification) across 26 counties in North Florida (Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Citrus, Clay, Columbia, Dixie, Duval, Flagler, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Hernando, Jefferson, Lafayette, Lake, Levy, Madison, Marion, Nassau, Putnam, Sumter, St. Johns, Suwannee, Taylor, Union & Volusia counties). Despite the loss of five starters, Hawthorne is closing in on the playoffs

By Alex Twist
@A_twist561

The Hawthorne Hornets lost a total of nine players including their entire starting five coming into this season.

Currently, Hawthorne has a record of 19-3 and went undefeated in district play heading into this week’s Class 1A-District 7 tournament.

I spoke with head coach Greg Bowie about the Hornets’ surprising run this year and their upcoming contest this evening against Chiefland in the district semifinals.

In Coach Bowie’s 13 years at Hawthorne he had never lost an entire starting five before, so I asked him how his boys have responded to this new challenge.

“They wanted to prove themselves and show that they could replace last
year’s guys,” said Bowie. “I told them this was more of a rebuilding year but the guys took it upon themselves to reload, not rebuild.”

The Hornets clearly made a quicker turnaround than Bowie expected. He said that he’s been impressed with the way this team defends compared to last year’s.

“Defensively, last year’s team was great and I didn’t believe they could play this aggressively and take charges like last year’s team could,” he said.

There are plenty of new faces on the team, and Bowie noted some of the breakout players for the Hornets this season.

“Torey Buie, he averages around 17 ppg, he can hit threes, get to the line, and is a great finisher at the rim,” he said.  “Jeremiah James has been our primary ball handler.  He is an aggressive scorer and good facilitator, the offense mainly runs through those two. Donovan Wright has been helping out inside challenging shots, and can get buckets on the offensive glass.”

New leaders have also emerged on the team.

Key’shawn Williams has been leading by example by checking the opposing team’s best player and accepting any challenge given to him.

“It definitely rubs off on the rest of the team,” Bowie said.

The Hornets play in their district semifinal tonight at 6 p.m. against Chiefland. A win against the Indians will put the Hornets in the postseason again.

“We’ve come out slow against some of our district opponents, its important to get off to quicker starts,” he said. “Chiefland will play a lot of zone, we have to do a better job attacking their zone and hitting our open shots. We also need to get out and guard Quay Brodus (19.6 ppg) on Chiefland.”

Sonic Drive-In Player-of-the-Game for Feb. 13 – Mya McGraw (P.K. Yonge)

The Sonic Drive-In Player-of-the-Game for Thursday, Feb. 13, was Mya McGraw of the P.K. Yonge (Gainesville) girls’ basketball team.

McGraw scored a game-high 26 points as No. 5 seed P.K. Yonge won at No. 4 seed Providence (Jacksonville), 64-46, in a Class 3A-Region 1 Quarterfinal.

East Tennessee State University signee Courtney Moore was next with 19 points, followed by junior Niyah Williams with nine.

“After the hard loss to Father Lopez (in the 3A-3 district championship game) we realized we had a lot of things to work on,” said McGraw.  “The team bonded together and we played well.”

P.K. Yonge (18-8) will travel to Father Lopez (Daytona Beach) for the second round of the Class 3A playoffs on Tuesday. The top-seeded Green Wave (25-2) eliminated No. 8 seed Interlachen, 79-37.
