The Prep Zone Show

Prep Zone Power Poll – 2012 Baseball Final

Gainesville – Spruce Creek (Port Orange) defeated two nationally-ranked teams, including the #1 team in the country, en route to the Class 8A state championship and a unanimous selection as the top team in the final baseball Prep Zone Power Poll.

The Hawks (28-4) knocked off #1 Olympia (Orlando) in the regional finals, followed by a win against the #11 team in the country, Miami Columbus, in the state championship game. Spruce Creek ascended all the way to No. 5 in the USA Today Super 25 national rankings.

Providence (Jacksonville) also took home a state title and finished second in the poll. The Stallions (27-5) won the Class 3A championship with a 2-0 win over American Heritage (Delray Beach) and ended the season with 20 consecutive victories. It was their second title (2008) in the past five years.

The Sharks of Ponte Vedra got all the way to the state title game in Class 5A, but fell to nationally-ranked American Heritage (Plantation), 9-0. They defeated #9 Clay (Green Cove Springs), 1-0 in nine innings, in the state semifinals. Ponte Vedra (21-9) also defeated then #1 Bishop Kenny (Jacksonville) in the regional semifinals.

Williston is ranked fourth. The Red Devils (25-4) lost in the 4A regional finals to Bishop Moore (Orlando), but they accomplished the most wins in school history and two playoff wins for the first time in 89 years.

Union County rounds out the top five. The Tigers (22-8) went 32 innings without being scored upon until the Class 1A state championship game. However, Union County went on to defeat Hilliard, 6-3, to win their first state baseball title in school history.

PK Yonge (Gainesville) (25-5) is ranked sixth, followed by 2A Trinity Christian (Deltona) (17-13), which won its third state title in the past four years, Bishop Kenny (Jacksonville) (24-5), Clay (Green Cove Springs) (21-10) and Episcopal (Jacksonville) (19-10) in the top 10.

Citrus (Inverness) (18-11), which made its longest playoff run since 1981, narrowly missed the top 20 after losing in the 6A regional finals, but 7A New Smyrna Beach (17-12) did crack the top 20 following its first trip to the final four in 75 years.

The Prep Zone Power Poll ranks the top 20 high school football, basketball, baseball & softball teams (regardless of classification) across 26 counties in north Florida (Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Citrus, Clay, Columbia, Dixie, Duval, Flagler, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Hernando, Jefferson, Lafayette, Lake, Levy, Madison, Marion, Nassau, Putnam, Sumter, St. Johns, Suwannee, Taylor, Union & Volusia counties). It only considers schools that are eligible for state championships. It is voted on weekly by sportswriters and sportscasters.

Prep Zone Power Poll – 2012 Softball Final

Gainesville – Following their first state softball title in school history, the Lafayette (Mayo) Hornets also finished on top of the final softball Prep Zone Power Poll.

The Hornets (25-4) climbed seven spots to No. 1 following a 4-0 record in the playoffs that included a win over #7 Union County (Lake Butler) in the Class 1A state semifinals. They then defeated Jay, 12-9, in the state championship game.

Bishop Snyder (Jacksonville) is ranked second. The Cardinals (25-6) went 4-1 in the postseason and finished as Class 3A runners-up after falling to American Heritage (Delray Beach), 3-0, in the state championship game.

Ponte Vedra also earned a trip to Clermont. The Sharks (23-6) lost to #5 Belleview, 6-4, in the Class 5A state semifinals and finished third in the poll.

The Mustangs of Mandarin (Jacksonville) (25-6), who lost to eventual 8A state champion Durant (Plant City) in the state semifinals, is ranked fourth ahead of the Rattlers. Belleview (20-9) was ranked 20th in the polls prior to the start of the postseason. However, they defeated the Nos. 1 (Creekside), 2 (North Marion), 3 (Ponte Vedra) and 12 (Tavares) teams and moved up 15 spots to round out the top five.

Keystone Heights (19-8), which won a slow pitch state title in 1989, won 10 in a row and 17 of 18 to advance to their first final four since 1995. The Indians (19-8) lost to Florida High (Tallahassee), 1-0, in the Class 3A state semifinals and finished sixth in the poll.

Union County (18-7) is ranked seventh, followed by North Marion (Citra) (25-3), Creekside (St. Johns (23-4) and PK Yonge (Gainesville) (19-9) in the top 10.

Gainesville Football


May 30th, 6:00pm – Our FINAL broadcast of 2011-12.  It’s a special two-hour season finale of “The Prep Zone Show” from Sonic on 39th Avenue in Gainesville.  Guests for hour #1 (6-7 p.m.) include members of the GHS football team.  Then, in hour #2 (7-8 p.m.), we’ll be joined by Larry Savage & Cliff Olsen of the Gainesville Sun for a year in review segment.  We’ll also release our final polls of the year for softball and baseball.

North Marion at Gainesville


May 25, 2012 – We are broadcasting Spring Football from Citizens Field in Gainesville. The Colts of North Marion head up 441 to take on The Purple Hurricanes. Both teams had a number of great seniors move on and its time to see who’s going to step up and fill the holes. This will be a fun one to watch. I’ll be doing the video as always and Marty Pallman will be on the play-by-play. Tyler TenBieg and Darrin Johnson will be joining us for color.

May 10, 6:00pm – “The Prep Zone” is broadcast ‘live’ from Sonic on 39th Avenue in Gainesville. Tonight, Mike Ridaught and guest host Cory Stephens are joined by the Union County (Lake Butler) baseball team and coach Brian Tomlinson. Santa Fe at Trinity Catholic


May 3rd, 7:00pm – Tonight we’re in Ocala for the Class 4A Regional Quarterfinals of the FHSAA state playoffs. The Santa Fe Raiders make the short drive south to take on the Celtics of Trinity Catholic. We expect to see quality pitching performances from both teams. Pre-game coverage will begin around 6:45 and the first pitch is scheduled for 7:00. Marty Pallman (Play-by-play) and Tyler TenBieg (Color).
