Prep Zone Power Poll – 2013 Football – Preseason

First Coast BucsGainesville – There is one word that describes the preseason football Prep Zone Power Poll – balance.

Seven different teams received a first-place vote, including the Class 8A First Coast (Jacksonville) Buccaneers, who are the No. 1 team heading into 2013. Plus, a total of 13 teams are receiving votes, including 2A Warner Christian (Daytona Beach) and 1A Union County (Lake Butler) – both of whom are ranked in the top three of the AP’s state football poll in their respective classes.

The ‘Bucs, who finished 10-1 but were upset by Buchholz (Gainesville) 10-7 in last year’s 7A regional quarterfinals, had enough second and third-place votes to get the top spot in the preseason poll. They move up to Class 8A this fall.

Columbia (Lake City), which also received a first-place vote, is ranked second. The Tigers, who lost in the 6A regional final last season to Navarre, open up the 2013 season this Friday night against last year’s 6A state runner-up, Gainesville.

Bolles (Jacksonville) was the 4A state runner-up a year ago and the 2011 state champion under Hall of Fame coach Corky Rogers, who has won more high school football championships than any other coach in Florida. The Bulldogs also garnered a first-place vote and are third in the poll.

Madison County, 3A state runners-up the last two seasons, is moving up to 4A for 2013. The Cowboys also grabbed a first-place vote and come in at #4.

Rounding out the top five is Fletcher (Neptune Beach), who moves down to Class 7A after making the state semifinals and regional final the last two years in Class 8A. The Senators also received a first-place vote.

Leading off the second five is Gainesville, who didn’t receive a first-place vote coming off a 14-1 season and state championship game loss to Miami Central. The Canes’ season gets off to a tough start with a trip to Lake City to play second-ranked Columbia this Friday night.

Trinity Christian (Jacksonville) also received a first-place vote and is seventh, followed by St. Augustine, Raines (Jacksonville), Mainland (Daytona Beach) and Trinity Catholic (Ocala) to round out the top 10. Mainland and Trinity Catholic are tied for 10th.

Last year’s 2A state champion University Christian is ranked #12. The Christians were the seventh and final team to receive a first-place vote in the poll. University Christian was a surprise last year as it won its 8th state title in program history, but they are ranked #1 in the AP state poll to begin the season.

The 1A state runner-up in 2012, Trenton, is tied for 17th, while Vanguard (Ocala) rounds out the poll at #20.

The Prep Zone Power Poll ranks the top 20 high school football, basketball, baseball & softball teams (regardless of FHSAA classification) across 26 counties in North Florida (Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Citrus, Clay, Columbia, Dixie, Duval, Flagler, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Hernando, Jefferson, Lafayette, Lake, Levy, Marion, Nassau, Putnam, Sumter, St. Johns, Suwannee, Taylor, Union & Volusia counties). It is voted on weekly by sportswriters and sportscasters.

Football is back. It doesn’t matter that this week’s games are a dress rehearsal, because there is football again. Friday night under the lights, and if you can’t be there, we’ll take you there beginning next week with our Game-of-the-Week on NBC Sports Radio, formerly ESPN Radio, in Gainesville (AM-1230) and Ocala (FM-100.1 & AM-900). Plus, we’ll stream ‘live’ and on-demand video too.

We plan on broadcasting a total of 17 high school football games this fall (schedule below), beginning with Florida Deaf (St. Augustine) at Oak Hall (Gainesville) on Thursday, August 29, followed by our first radio broadcast on Friday, August 30, as Gainesville travels to Columbia (Lake City) in a match-up of programs ranked in Friday Night Football’s Top 25 all-classification poll.

GHS, last year’s 6A state runners-up, highlights our broadcast schedule. The ‘Canes will play Columbia, Eastside and Madison County in successive weeks. Gainesville has a new coach (Mark Latsko), a new quarterback (TBD) and a difficult schedule. But all-state running back Tony James returns, along with wide receiver Kenric Young and tight end Nick McGriff on offense, while lineman Herman Bellamy will lead up front defensively, along with linebacker Matt Solt, and Juan Jenkins, who will anchor the secondary. The 6A-District 5 title could be decided on Friday, October 18, when GHS travels to Vanguard (Ocala).

In addition to our ‘live’ coverage of high school football, we’ll be broadcasting our weekly high school show, “The Prep Zone,” from Sonic on 39th Avenue in Gainesville, for the third consecutive year. The video program, hosted by myself and Marty Pallman, will air every Tuesday from 6-7 p.m., beginning on Tuesday, Aug. 27, with our guests: Oak Hall football coach Scott McDaniel and his seniors.

Also back is the Prep Zone Power Poll, which ranks the top 20 high school football, basketball, baseball & softball teams across 25 counties. Our first poll will be released on Tuesday, Aug. 27 during our show.

Finally, we’ll recap the night of high school football with local coaches and preview the day in Gator & SEC football every Saturday on “The Prep Zone Tailgate,” which debuts on Saturday, Aug. 30, from 9-10 a.m. on NBC Sports Radio and on theprepzone.com. High school football is just the beginning as we kick-off the 2013-14 high school sports season with extensive coverage on The Prep Zone Sports Network. Good luck to all of the local teams and enjoy the games!

Prep Zone Power Poll – 2013 Baseball Final Poll

Ponte VedraGainesville – A total of seven area teams advanced to the FHSAA Baseball Finals at JetBlue Park in Fort Myers, but only two emerged as a state champion.

Those teams (Ponte Vedra and Trenton) finished first and second, respectively, in the final baseball Prep Zone Power Poll despite the fact the Tigers received more first-place votes than the Sharks.

Ponte Vedra’s improbable run through the state playoffs included an upset of the No. 3 team in the country when they upset Tampa Jesuit, 2-1, in eight innings in the Class 5A state semifinals. The Sharks (21-11) then defeated Estero, 6-2, in nine innings to win their first state baseball title in only their fifth year of existence.

Ponte Vedra, the 5A Runners-up in 2012, also defeated #15 Nease (Ponte Vedra) and #17 Baker County (Glen St. Mary) in the postseason.

Trenton won its first-ever state baseball title too. The Tigers (27-1), who outscored their opponents 40-3 in the postseason, avenged their only loss of the season with an 11-1 win in six innings against No. 12 Chiefland.

Ponte Vedra received three first-place votes, but Trenton received the other four. However, the Sharks edged the Tigers for the top spot by just one total voting point, 136-135.

Defending 3A state champion Providence (Jacksonville) finished third. The Stallions (20-12) advanced to the 3A title game but lost to Melbourne Central Catholic, 2-1. They were district runners-up who went on the road to beat North Florida Christian (Tallahassee), previous #20 Eagle’s View and RV Father Lopez to advance to the final four.

Episcopal (Jacksonville), which defeated previous No. 3 Bolles (Jacksonville) in the 4A regional semifinals, finished fourth. The Eagles (23-7) lost on the road to eventual state champion Pensacola Catholic, which finished #1 in the USA Today Super 25, in the regional finals.

Rounding out the top five was 4A state semifinalist Trinity Catholic (Ocala). The Celtics (20-10) lost to eventual state runners-up Monsignor Pace (Miami), 5-1, in the 4A state semifinals – their third state semifinal appearance in school history.

Creekside (St. Johns) (20-10), 5A state semifinalist, is ranked sixth, followed by Fletcher (Neptune Beach) (24-5) at No. 7, Clay (Green Cove Springs) (20-7) at No. 8 and Bolles (Jacksonville) (23-6) at No. 9.

Bishop Kenny (Jacksonville) (22-5), which had its 12-game winning streak snapped in the first round of the 5A state playoffs, dropped nine spots from #1 to round out the top 10. The Crusaders (22-5), 5A-District 3 champions, lost to previous #10 Nease (Ponte Vedra), 7-2, in the regional quarterfinals.

Other state semifinalist participants – Chiefland (1A) and Trinity Christian (2A) – both lost in their respective classification championship games and finished 12th and 14th, respectively, in the final poll.

The Prep Zone Power Poll ranks the top 20 high school football, basketball, baseball & softball teams (regardless of FHSAA classification) across 26 counties in North Florida (Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Citrus, Clay, Columbia, Dixie, Duval, Flagler, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Hernando, Jefferson, Lafayette, Lake, Levy, Marion, Nassau, Putnam, Sumter, St. Johns, Suwannee, Taylor, Union & Volusia counties). It is voted on weekly by sportswriters and sportscasters.
