The victory also snapped a 17-game losing streak for the Hornets, who picked up their first win since 2011.

Sonic Player-of-the-Game

GGiberti helped the GHS defense hold its rival Buchholz to just 210 yards of total offense in a 26-14 win to extend the ‘Canes streak to five in a row in the series. The sophomore defensive end batted down a couple of passes at the line of scrimmage and put the game on ice with a 21-yard fumble return for a touchdown with 7:04 to play in the game.

Prep Zone Power Poll – 2013 Football – Week 8

FletcherGainesville – There was a shakeup at the top of the Prep Zone Power Poll.

That’s because the top three teams all lost last week, catapulting Class 7A Fletcher (Neptune Beach) up four spots to No. 1. The Senators (5-1) received three of the seven first-place votes.

Top-ranked Columbia (Lake City) suffered its first defeat at 6A-District 3 foe Ed White (Jacksonville), which moved up seven spots to No. 11 following a 34-17 win against the Tigers (6-1), who dropped four spots to fifth.

Second-ranked Trinity Christian (Jacksonville) also lost its first game of the season. The Class 3A Conquerors (5-1) were crushed at 5A Godby (Tallahassee), 42-6, and fell four spots as well to sixth.

Plus, No. 3 Raines (Jacksonville) lost on the final play of the game at Fletcher, 17-14, and actually dropped six spots to ninth after the Vikings’ second loss of the season.

Fletcher leap-frogged unbeaten South Sumter (Bushnell) in the poll, but the 5A Raiders (7-0), who defeated Hernando (Brooksville), 34-14, received two first-place votes and narrowly missed the No. 1 ranking as they were edged in total voting points, 132-131.

Following a 59-0 win over Jackson (Jacksonville), First Coast (Jacksonville) moved up three spots to third. The Buccaneers (5-1), who defeated Fletcher in overtime in Week #3, received one first-place vote. The only loss this season for the preseason No. 1 team was at Raines.

Mainland (Daytona Beach) received the other first-place vote. The Bucs (6-1) defeated Oviedo on the road, 47-6, and moved up three spots to No. 4.

A total of seven ranked teams lost last week, including previously unbeaten Chiefland (5-1), which lost at defending 1A state runner-up Trenton with five seconds to play in the game.

The Class 1A Indians dropped out of the poll, making room for Fort White, which was idle last week. The Class 4A Indians (4-0) are in the poll for the first time this season at No. 20, while 2A Warner Christian (South Daytona) (6-1) also enters the poll for the first time at No. 19 following their fifth consecutive victory.

Buchholz at Gainesville

Friday, October 11th at 7 pm – High School Football – Buchholz (Gainesville) at Gainesville

Final: Gainesville 26, Buchholz 14

Join Mike Ridaught (Play-by-play), Tyler TenBeig (Color) & TBA (Sidelines) for the ‘mythical’ city championship game.

7A BUCHHOLZ (3-2) AT 6A GAINESVILLE (4-1): The city championship is on the line as the Bobcats and Hurricanes meet in this 42nd annual battle. Since 2009, it has been onesided in favor of Gainesville, which has won four straight in the series, the last three convincingly. However before GHS’s latest streak, it was the Bobcats that ruled, winning the six previous from 2003-2008. Tonight’s game could be the closest in years, at least Buchholz fans hope so. The Bobcats, who pulled out a 24-21 triple overtime win over 6A St. Johns Bartram Trail a week ago, are in a brutal district that includes the No. 6 (Fleming Island) and No. 8 (Neptune Beach Fletcher) ranked teams in 7A. Both Buchholz and GHS are led by sophomore QBs. Bobcat Jackson White completed 11 of 13 passes in the second half for 113 of his 146 yards with one TD against Bartram Trail. Junior RB Gerald Donald ran for 76 of his 96 yards also in the second half. The Buchholz defense contained the Bears’ lethal passing attack. GHS, which opened the season ranked No. 5 in 6A, has won four straight since its season-opening loss at Columbia. Oregon commit Tony James has 456 yards rushing on the season with 3 TDs while WR Kenric Young is averaging 22.9 yards per catch. QB Caelen Christian has passed for 436 yards and 6 TDs. Both teams have huge district games the following week, Buchholz at Orange Park Oakleaf and GHS at Ocala Vanguard. GHS has not shown the ability to put teams away this season and don’t expect them to start against the Bobcats, who are hungry for redemption. Buchholz leads the series 24-17. via: Gainesville Preps

Prep Zone Power Poll – 2013 Football – Week 7

Columbia TigersGainesville – There was very little movement in this week’s Prep Zone Power Poll as only one ranked team lost.

The top three teams remained the same, while the Nos. 4 & 5 teams flip-flopped.

Columbia (Lake City) remained No. 1. The Tigers (6-0) received six of the seven first-place votes following a 44-20 win over Orange Park.

Trinity Christian (Jacksonville) received the other first-place vote and remained No. 2 following a 59-7 win against Episcopal (Jacksonville). But the Conquerors (5-0) have a tough two-game stretch coming up with games at Godby (Tallahassee) and at home against unbeaten IMG Academy (Bradenton), plus a season-ending road trip to 6A Vanguard (Ocala).

Raines (Jacksonville) remained No. 3. The Vikings (4-1) defeated Baldwin, 46-0. Their only loss this season was at Miami Northwestern.

Meanwhile, Fletcher (Neptune Beach) and South Sumter (Bushnell) flip-flopped as Fletcher’s 20-17 win over Atlantic Coast (Jacksonville) in overtime dropped the Senators (4-1) one spot to fifth, while the Raiders (6-0) moved up to fourth following a 38-14 win over Pasco (Dade City).

First Coast (Jacksonville) (4-1) and Mainland (Daytona Beach) (5-1) moved ahead of Bolles (Jacksonville) (4-1) to Nos. 6 & 7 respectively, while the ‘Dogs, who were off, dropped to No. 8. Bishop Kenny (Jacksonville) (4-0) remained ninth and Fleming Island (Orange Park) (6-0) stayed at No. 10.

Union County (Lake Butler) was the only team in the top 20 to fall as the Class 1A Tigers (5-1) lost 30-12 at No. 16 Dixie County (Cross City) (4-0) and dropped out of this week’s poll. That opened the door for Chiefland (5-0), which was idle, to move into the poll for the first time this season at No. 20.

The Prep Zone Power Poll ranks the top 20 high school football, basketball, baseball & softball teams (regardless of FHSAA classification) across 26 counties in North Florida (Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Citrus, Clay, Columbia, Dixie, Duval, Flagler, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Hernando, Jefferson, Lafayette, Lake, Levy, Marion, Nassau, Putnam, Sumter, St. Johns, Suwannee, Taylor, Union & Volusia counties).
