  • December 9 is Jake Altom of the Cornerstone Academy (Gainesville) football team. Altom had 101 yards rushing, 207 yards receiving and four TD’s as Cornerstone Academy defeated Donahue Catholic (Ave Marie), 56-33, to win the Florida Christian Association of Private and Parochial Schools (FCAPPS) state championship.  The senior helped lead the Cougars to a perfect 11-0 record.

  • Tuesday, December 17, was Eric Williams of the Lake Weir (Ocala) boys’ basketball team. Williams scored 13 of his game-high 21 points in the second quarter as Lake Weir (Ocala) defeated Eastside (Gainesville), 53-48, in a Class 5A-District 5 game. The senior helped lead the Hurricanes (7-3, 3-0) back from a 10-point first quarter deficit against the Rams (5-2, 2-2).

  • December 2nd is Stephen Smith of the Trenton football team. Smith threw a game-winning 54-yard touchdown pass to Hamp Cheevers in the first quarter to help lead the Trenton Tigers (12-1) to their first state football championship in school history with a 14-0 win over Blountstown in the Class 1A state championship game at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando. Smith, who led the baseball team to a state title in May, finished the season with 1,003 yards passing, 13 TD’s and only one interception, along with over 600 yards rushing and six scores. It was the area’s first state football title in 16 years (Chiefland ’97).

  • November 25 is Jacquez Powell of the Trenton football team. Powell scored two touchdowns to help Trenton win its 21st straight home game as they advanced in the playoffs with a 17-14 win over previously unbeaten Dixie County (Cross City) in the Class 1A state semifinals.  The senior gave the Tigers (11-1) a 7-0 lead with 46-yard TD run in the first quarter.  He added a three-yard run in the second quarter for Trenton, which advanced to its second consecutive 1A state title game.
