  • April 23 is Garland Evans of the PK Yonge (Gainesville) softball team. Evans had two hits and four RBI as the Blue Wave opened the Class 3A state playoffs with an 11-1 win over The Villages in five innings. The junior had a two-run single as part of a six-run fourth to put the game out of reach. She added another single in the fifth which drove in the final two runs of the game.
  • May 1 is Kaitlyn Burke of the PK Yonge (Gainesville) softball team. Burke singled in the first inning and later scored on an error as the Blue Wave (22-3) took an early 2-0 lead and went on to defeat South Sumter (Bushnell), 3-0, in the 3A regional semifinals. The sophomore catcher also made some big plays defensively as she picked off a runner at first in the second inning and picked off another runner at second in the third.

  • Week of April 28, was BeJai Fray of the Lake Weir (Ocala) girls’ track & field team. Fray, who won the 139-pound state weightlifting title in February, took home her second state title in 2014 by winning the long jump at the FHSAA Class 3A state track & field meet in Jacksonville. The senior, who plans on signing with Florida International University, jumped 18-11 to win the long jump title. She was also a part of the Hurricanes’ 4X100 team, which finished second with a time of 48.05, just behind nationally-ranked Miami Northwestern (47.16) and not far off of the Marion County record (47.64) which Lake Weir set in the regional meet.
  • Week of May 5, was Brittany Gilliam of the Chiefland softball team. Gilliam, a State College of Florida signee, had four hits at the state tournament in Vero Beach helping Chiefland (19-5) to its first state softball title in school history. The senior went 3-for-3 with a double, a triple and three runs scored in a 12-2 win over No. 3 Sneads in the state semifinals. She added a hit, a run and an RBI in a 9-2 win over No. 2 Jay in the Class 1A state championship game. It was the school’s first girls FHSAA state title and the first for the Levy county school since winning the 2A football title in 1997.
