High school football playoffs – By the Numbers

FHSAA_15football_small0 – Zero points allowed in the playoffs by 8A Flanagan, which is the only team to post back-to-back shutouts.  They host top-ranked Atlantic (Delray Beach) tonight

2 – A total of six Associated Press (AP) No. 1 ranked football teams moved on but two top-ranked teams lost in the second round of the FHSAA state playoffs – Dunnellon (4A), which lost at Santa Fe (Alachua), 15-14, & Plantation American Heritage (5A), which lost to No. 7 Hallandale, 27-20

3 – Second least amount of points given up in the playoffs over two games by two-time defending 3A state champion Trinity Christian (Jacksonville).  The Conquerors defeated Pensacola Catholic, 49-3, in Week #1, followed by a 51-0 win at Taylor County (Perry) in Week #2

4 – Number of top five match-ups in round three: #1 Cambridge (Tampa) vs. #5 First Baptist (Naples) in Class 2A, #1 Trinity Christian (Jacksonville) vs. #5 Tampa Catholic in 3A, No. 4 Charlotte (Punta Gorda) vs. #5 Naples in Class 6A, and #3 Mandarin (Jacksonville) vs. #4 West Orange (Winter Garden) in Class 8A

6 – Total number of defending state champions alive (1A – Port St. Joe, 2A – Lakeland Victory Christian, 3A – Jacksonville Trinity Christian, 4A – Miami Booker T. Washington, 6A – Miami Central, and 7A – Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas)

8 – Total points allowed in two playoff games by 4A Raines (Jacksonville), which has posted seven shutouts this season; their opponent on Friday, Santa Fe, has only allowed 14 points in two games

9 – There are nine district runners-up remaining in the state playoffs – Lakeland Victory Christian (2A), Delray Beach American Heritage (3A), Hallandale (5A), Cantonment Tate (6A), Gainesville (6A), Miami Central (6A), St. Johns Bartram Trail (7A), Hialeah Gardens Mater Academy (7A) & Miami Columbus (8A)

13 – Number of catches by North Marion’s (Citra) Freddie Swain, a Gator commit, in the season ending loss at Clay (Green Cove Springs) in 5A. According to state statistician Richard Burton of the Ocala Star-Banner, it was the most by a Marion County player in the playoffs since Vanguard’s Antonio Wilkerson had 15 in 1998.

37 – Rushing yards for Bolles (Jacksonville) on 28 carries in a 34-8 loss at Raines (Jacksonville) in the Class 4A Regional Finals

63 – Number of TDs this season for Nature Coast (Brooksville) RB De’Shawn Smith, which ranks 6th nationally all-time (national record is 68 set in 2001). The senior had six TDs in a 42-33 win against River Ridge (New Port Richey) in Class 5A. Smith has over 3,500 yards rushing this season

65 – The 65 points by Clay (Green Cove Springs) in Class 5A were the most points scored in the postseason in Week #2. The 58 points by North Marion (Citra) in the loss were the second most points scored. Columbia (Lake City) scored 57 in their Class 7A win

93 – Points in the playoffs by Madison County and Trenton, who face each other this Friday night in the 1A state semifinals

109 – Total points in the playoffs by 5A Clay (Green Cove Springs), which is the most by any team.  The Blue Devils defeated Eastside (Gainesville), 44-0, followed by North Marion (Citra), 65-58

133 – Receiving yards for Tampa Catholic’s Nate Craig-Meyers, the top receiver in the state according to 247 Sports, in a 35-6 win at Trinity Catholic (Ocala) in Class 3A. The Crusaders will travel to top-ranked Trinity Christian (Jacksonville)

206 – Receiving yards for Buchholz (Gainesville) junior Luke Whittemore on 12 receptions in a 35-21 loss to Bartram Trail (St. Johns) in Class 7A

496 – Total yards rushing on 35 carries by Clay (Green Cove Springs) senior Bilal Ally in a 65-58 win against North Marion (Citra) in the 5A Regional Semifinals. Ally had touchdown runs of 73, 4, 75, 78 and 32 yards and a 92-yard kickoff return for a touchdown against the Colts

941 – Combined rushing yards by Nature Coast’s (Brooksville) De’Shawn Smith and Clay’s (Green Cove Springs) Bilal Ally. Smith had 445 yards on 28 carries against River Ridge (New Port Richey). Ally had a Florida playoff-record 496 yards on 35 carries against North Marion (Citra). They go head-to-head this Friday in the Class 5A Regional Finals
