We’ll also discuss the baseball & softball Prep Zone Power Poll, recap our Sonic Player-of-the-Game and recognize our Trophy Shop Athlete-of-the-Week presented by Mark McGriff’s State Farm Insurance of Gainesville.

Sonic Player-of-the-Game

  • Wednesday, May 1, was Sam Atwell of the Trinity Catholic (Ocala) baseball team. Atwell’s first hit of the season was a walk-off solo home run in the bottom of the 13th inning as Trinity Catholic (Ocala) defeated Fort White, 2-1, in the first round of the Class 4A state playoffs – their first postseason win in three years. The junior also picked up the win in relief. He only allowed two base runners in seven innings pitched.

Trophy Shop Athlete-of-the-Week Presented by State Farm agent Mark McGriff

  • Week of April 29, Ralph Webb of the Gainesville track & field team. Webb took first place in the long jump at the FHSAA Class 3A Track & Field Finals. The senior had a winning leap of 23-04.50 to win his second consecutive state title. The Vanderbilt football signee also ran the first leg for GHS’ 4X100 meter relay team, which placed second in the event. Webb’s efforts helped the Hurricanes to a third place finish in the team standings.
