Sonic Player-of-the-Game

  • January 18, Isaiah Jackson of the Gainesville boys’ basketball team. Jackson scored a team-high 19 points and narrowly missed a triple-double as GHS (13-7) defeated city rival Eastside, 73-53, at Santa Fe College on Friday night.  The junior had 13 of his points in the fourth quarter as the ‘Canes outscored the Rams, 29-11, en route to the biggest margin of victory in the series since 2009.  Jackson also led the team with 11 rebounds and nine assists.

Trophy Shop Athlete-of-the-Week Presented by Mark McGriff’s State Farm Insurance of Gainesville for the week of January 14

  • Van Turner of the PK Yonge (Gainesville) boys’ basketball team.  Turner scored a season-high 40 points in a 77-68 win against Buchholz on Friday.  He was 9-of-13 from the floor and 17-of-19 from the free throw line. Earlier in the week, the senior scored 21 points to lead the Blue Wave to a 68-66 win over district rival St. Francis Catholic, which evened up the standings at 7-1 with the first-place Wolves.  Trailing by one point, Turner hit a 25-foot game-winner with three seconds left.
