Event Details: Join Mike Ridaught (Play-by-play) and George Koziara (Color) for this Alachua County vs. Marion County showdown and key 6A-District 5 game, which will also air on 104.9 FM, 92.1 FM & AM-1230 in Gainesville, as well as FM-100.1 & AM-900 in Ocala.
The ‘Canes (3-3, 1-1) have played a tough schedule this year. This is their 7th game and five of their opponents were ranked at the time, and that doesn’t include Ocala Forest which is not ranked but is undefeated. They’ve faced two 7A schools who were ranked in Columbia & Buchholz, they lost at 5A Green Cove Springs Clay, which was high as 3rd in the state, so they’re battle tested, but this is their biggest challenge of the season playing at Vanguard (Ocala), which is ranked 2nd in the state in Class 6A.
The Knights (5-0, 1-0) are loaded with a high-powered offense and a stacked defense. Miami commit N’Kosi Perry set a school record for touchdown passes in September, moving ahead of former NFL quarterback Daunte Culpepper; FSU commit Justin Watkins is a play-maker; and, on defense, the Knights are led by Adrian Hope, who recorded five sacks against Buchholz, and is the all-time sacks leader in Marion County history. Perry has 11 TD passes and only 2 INT in 87 attempts. He’ll go over 1,000 yards on Friday. Last year, he was the 6A Player of the Year. Watkins has carried the ball 61 times for 488 yards – that’s an average of 8 yards per carry. He’s averaging 172 all-purpose yards per game so he can beat you in a number of different ways. Justin Watkins is rated the No. 1 junior athlete in the country by ESPN. 247 Sports lists him as the No. 7 overall player in Florida for the Class of 2018. Defensive End Adrian Hope has 14 sacks. Gainesville has 13 as a team.
