This past Friday, the Newberry Panthers traveled to Williston to take on the Red Devils. Both teams were 0-3 at the time, and with both hungry for a win, everyone in attendance knew it would be a competitive game.
The final score was 42-28 in favor of Williston. Not only did it give the Red Devils their first win of the year, but it gave them their first win in eight tries against the Panthers.
The Devil offense was humming after some early sloppiness in the game.
Senior quarterback CJ Strange scored two touchdowns, one passing and another rushing. His passing touchdown was a bomb to senior wide receiver Jermon Collins, while his rushing touchdown was a from a few yards out on a quarterback keeper. Sophomore running back Jacurtis Pitts scored a rushing touchdown as well for the Devils.
The real star of the night was running back/cornerback and Toledo commit Quinyon Mitchell, who scored three touchdowns in the game. He picked up chunk gains all night, making the Newberry defense look non-existent. Mitchell’s last touchdown of the night was a scamper to the endzone from 50+ yards out to effectively put the game away.
The senior also contributed immensely on defense, recording a handful of interceptions whenever Newberry decided to throw the ball. He and the rest of the Devil defense clamped down on the pass, but the run game was a different story.
Newberry kept itself in the game with large gains on the ground for much of the game, mixing in touchdowns to keep the game close until the final minutes. Sophomore running back Kobe Delima looked good all night for the Panthers.
Williston’s next game will be on Friday, September 28th, on the road against a 2-2 Ft. White team which is led by coach Demetric Jackson.
Newberry will be playing the same day against Union County. The Tigers are 3-2 and led by coach Ronny Pruitt.
Good luck to both teams in their next games. For updates during the Williston games, follow me on Twitter @tcole2025.
