Our Sonic Player-of-the-game for Thursday, March 9, is Payton Weinberg of the Gainesville baseball team.
Weinberg helped lead GHS to a 1-0 victory against Columbia (Lake City) in a Class 7A-District 3 opener. The junior right-handed pitcher threw six innings and allowed no runs on five hits in picking up the victory.
He also walked just one and struck out four batters in improving to 2-1 on the season.
Sean Wiggs drove in the only run of the game in the 4th with a two-out hit.
The Hurricanes improved to 5-2 overall and 1-0 in the district. Gainesville will travel to Lake City on Friday.
