Blanche Ely’s Melvin Randall Named 2015 Boys’ Basketball Coach of the Year

GAINESVILLE (March 31) – Head coach Melvin Randall of Blanche Ely High School in Pompano Beach has been named the 2015 Florida Dairy Farmers Boys’ Basketball Coach of the Year following a final round of voting by a statewide panel of high school basketball coaches and media representatives.

Randall, who also won this award in 2013, led the Tigers to a 28-0 record, the school’s third state title in four years and the No. 4 spot in USA Today’s national high school rankings. The championship was Randall’s fourth state title at Ely and sixth overall (two at Deerfield Beach), giving him more boys’ state basketball titles than any coach in Broward County history. In his 23-year career, Randall has compiled an overall record of 482-141.

Randall, who was selected as the Class 7A Coach of the Year in a previous round of voting, finished with 135 points to win the overall award, with Class 4A COY Andy Colville (126) of undefeated state champion Tallahassee Godby and Class 6A COY Lawton Williams III (122)
of Miami Norland rounding out the top three.

Following in order were Class 8A COY Matt Colin (119) of Wellington, Class 3A COY Jim Martin (101) of Providence, Class 5A COY Marty Seidlin (79) of Cardinal Gibbons, Independent COY Kevin Boyle (76) of Montverde Academy, Class 1A COY Joey Orlando (64) of Chipley and Class 2A COY Andrew Moran (52) of Miami Christian.

The Florida Dairy Farmers High School Sports Awards program exemplifies Florida Dairy Farmers’ commitment to the state’s youth. This is the 23rd year of these unique awards as we honor the state’s top athletes and coaches in all 30 FHSAA sanctioned and recognized sports. The program also emphasizes to young people the importance of keeping dairy products a primary part of their diet in their overall nutrition plan.
