Nationally-ranked Gainesville’s loss enables Forest (Ocala) to move up

GAINESVILLE – There was quite a shake-up at the top of the Prep Zone Power Poll heading into the postseason.

Nationally-ranked Gainesville was upset by Oakleaf (Orange Park), 4-2, in the Class 6A-District 2 semifinals, snapping the ‘Canes 21-game winning streak, and ending their season at 24-2. GHS, ranked No. 1 in Class 6A, dropped to 10th in this week’s poll, while Oakleaf (16-12) is receiving votes.

Class 6A-District 6 champion Forest (Ocala), which is ranked No. 2 in the 6A rankings, takes over as the new No. 1 team. The Lady Wildcats (25-2), who received five of the six first-place votes, will open up regional play at home on Thursday against District 5 Runner-up Seabreeze (Daytona Beach), which is also receiving votes.

The Sandcrabs (15-5), an honorable mention in 6A, were the top seed in the district but ended up losing in the title game to #2 seed Deltona, which moved up five spots to #14. The Wolves (18-3), who took two of three from the Sandcrabs this season, will host Lake Minneola in the opening round.

Another Marion County school, Belleview, is ranked second. The Rattlers (21-6) won the Class 5A-District 5 championship by outscoring their two opponents 24-0.

Creekside (St. Johns) moved up seven spots to third. The Knights, 6A-District 4 champions, defeated previous #3 Bartram Trail (St. Johns), 7-2, in the district championship game, dropping the Bears (21-6) to 11th in the regional rankings. The teams could meet again on Tuesday, April 28, in the regional semifinals.

Rounding out the top five is Baker County (Glen St. Mary) at No. 4 and Atlantic Coast (Jacksonville) at No. 5. Both teams were district champions.

South Sumter (Bushnell) is ranked sixth, followed by Fleming Island (Orange Park), Clay (Green Cove Springs), Bradford (Starke) and Gainesville in the top 10.

Santa Fe (Alachua) moves into the top 20 at No. 17 following the 4A-District 5 championship, which included a 5-4 win over Bradford (Starke) in the district championship game.

Defending 1A state champion Chiefland also jumped into the rankings at No. 20. The Lady Indians (15-4), ranked 4th in Class 1A, won the 1A-District 7 title.

Previous No. 18 Bolles (Jacksonville) fell out of the rankings. The top-seeded ‘Dogs (14-9) had their season come to an end with a 7-5 loss to Baldwin in the 4A-District 3 semifinals.

The is the last poll until the final poll, which will be released on Tuesday, May 12.

The Prep Zone Power Poll ranks the top 20 high school football, basketball, baseball & softball teams (regardless of FHSAA classification) across 26 counties in North Florida (Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Citrus, Clay, Columbia, Dixie, Duval, Flagler, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Hernando, Jefferson, Lafayette, Lake, Levy, Madison, Marion, Nassau, Putnam, Sumter, St. Johns, Suwannee, Taylor, Union & Volusia counties). It is voted on weekly by sportswriters and sportscasters.
