GAINESVILLE (June 16) – Scott Gowan of Tallahassee Chiles High School and Carmen Jackson of Miami Northwestern Senior High School have been named the Florida Dairy Farmers 2015 Boys’ and Girls’ Track and Field Coaches of the Year following a final round of voting by a panel of state high school track and field coaches and media representatives.

Gowan, the Boys’ Class 3A Coach-of-the-Year, led Chiles to its second straight state title, and its third overall (2003), with a solid 14-point margin over rival Tallahassee Leon. This was the fifth overall state track coach-of-the-year award for Gowan, and his first since winning four straight awards as the head coach at Port St. Joe from 1996-99. Gowan has also won four cross country coaching honors (girls 2008, 2009 and boys 2003, 2006). Gowan won this year’s award over Class 4A COY Jorge Fleitas of Dr. Phillips, Class 2A COY John Battle of Hallandale and Class 1A COY Doria Yeaman-Rickel of Westminster Academy.

Jackson, the Girls’ Class 3A COY, led powerhouse Northwestern to its seventh consecutive state championship, and state-best 12th title overall, with a state-record 155 points. This is Jackson’s second straight overall coaching award and seventh in her illustrious career (2014-15, 2009-11, 2007 and 2001). Jackson won this year’s award over Class 4A COY Alex Armenteros of St. Thomas Aquinas, Class 2A COY John Battle of Hallandale and Class 1A COY Edwin McTureous of Oak Hall School.

The Florida Dairy Farmers Sports Awards program exemplifies Florida Dairy Farmers’ commitment to the state’s youth. This is the 23rd year of these unique awards as we honor the state’s top athletes and coaches in an all-time high 30 sanctioned and recognized FHSAA sports. The program also emphasizes to young people the importance of keeping dairy products a primary part of their diet in their overall nutrition plan.
