Battle of the Hurricanes – Gainesville travels to Lake Weir (Ocala)

It might be Hurricanes season in Florida, but if you hear sirens Friday night most likely it’ll be from the Lake Weir Hurricanes hosting the Gainesville High School Hurricanes in a Class 6A-District 5 showdown. GHS goes into the game with a 1-1 record, while Lake Weir enters with a 3-0 record.
Previous Game Results
Gainesville High School is coming off its bye week. However, two week ago GHS was able to beat Santa Fe (Alachua), 35-6. The ‘Canes scored the majority of their points in the first quarter with 21. Senior QB Luke Matthews went 16 for 18 with 271 yards and 2 TD. Junior RB Trey Parker carried the ball 3 times for 28 yards. Senior running back Niles Cromwell also had a good game carrying the ball six times for 20 yards and a TD. In the passing game, Senior WR Isaac Meacham caught four passes for 78 yards.
Last week, Lake Weir beat the Eustis Panthers, 45-6. Junior QB Deiontae Simpkins went 8 for 13 with 255 yards, 2 TD’s and one interception. Senior RB/LB, Zian King had 10 carries for 191 yards and 2 TD’s.
The Stats and Players to Watch For
In the rushing game, Lake Weir leads with an average of 263 yards per game compared to GHS’ 98.5 yards per game. But in the passing game, GHS is the leader with 331.5 yards per game compared to Lake Weir’s 251 yards per game.
Isaac Meacham is Gainesville High School’s leading rusher with 30.5 rushing yards per game. Quarterback Luke Matthews racks up 331.5 total yards per game. On defense, junior CB/FS Michael Cromarty averages nine tackles per game.
For Lake Weir, Zian King averages 144.3 rushing yards per game and QB Deiontae Simpkins averages 299.3 total yards per game. On the other side of the ball, Yanick Chin averages six tackles per game and 2.5 sacks per game.
The game will be played at Lake Weir High School in Ocala. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. GHS won last year’s meeting on Homecoming, 41-0. The have dominated the series, winning the last nine going back to 2009.
