Sonic Player-of-the-Game (Oct. 13) – Marquez Glover (Vanguard)
Our Sonic Player-of-the-game for Friday, Oct. 13, is Marquez Glover of the Vanguard (Ocala) football team.
Glover scored the game-winning TD with a little over a minute to play to give Class 6A No. 5 Vanguard a 31-24 win at Gainesville. The Knights, the top-ranked team in The Prep Zone Power Poll, stayed unbeaten at 6-0, including 3-0 in 6A-District 5.
The senior threw for 274 yards and three TD’s, but it was his 2-yard QB draw with 1:03 to play that ended up being the difference.
Following a 32-yard field goal by Gainesville’s Derek Holloway to tie the game with 5:02 remaining, Glover calmly led the Knights down the field on a 9-play scoring drive.
With under three minutes to play, Glover found senior wide receiver Debarre Jenkins, an FAU commit, on a 16-yard pass play across the middle for a first and goal at the GHS 10-yard line. The touchdown came on a third-and-goal at the 2.
Glover, who has received interest from Toledo, Georgia State, FAU & FIU, had a 19-yard TD pass to Leonard Manuel with under four minutes to play in the opening half to put the Knights on the scoreboard, followed by a 10-yard TD pass to Trevonte Rucker with four seconds left in the second quarter to give Vanguard a 14-7 lead at the half.
The Knights took the second-half kickoff and marched down the field in the third quarter, scoring on a 20-yard pass from Glover to Louisville commit Glover Cook for their largest lead at 21-7.
Vanguard, which controls its playoff destiny, will host Lake Weir on Friday, Oct. 20, followed by a city showdown at Forest for the district title on Friday, Oct. 27.
