Calvary Christian’s Greg Olsen Named 2017 Baseball Coach of the Year

Sports-Award-Logo_Color_Florida Dairy FarmerGAINESVILLE (June 19) – Greg Olsen of Calvary Christian High School in Clearwater has been named the Florida Dairy Farmers 2017 Baseball Coach of the Year following a final round of voting by a statewide panel of high school baseball coaches and media representatives.

In his sixth year at Calvary Christian, Olsen guided the Eagles to a 30-0 record and the 2017 Class 4A state championship. The state championship was the first for Calvary Christian in any sport and the school posted the state’s first unbeaten record since Pensacola Catholic pulled off the feat in 2013. Olsen has a record of 125-46 in his six years at Calvary and an overall career mark of 253-86 in 12 years of coaching.

Olsen, who previously was selected as the Class 4A COY, won the overall award with nine first-place votes and 123 points, to finish ahead of Class 9A COY Tim Beaman of Timber Creek who had five first-place votes and 78 points. Class 6A COY Rich Bielski of Archbishop McCarthy finished third with 61 points followed by Class 8A COY Mike Gauger of Lincoln (55), Class 1A COY Adam Burton of Trenton (32), Class 3A COY Frank Turco of The Canterbury School (24), Class 5A COY Mike Boswell of The Bolles School (17), Class 2A COY Miguel Cuello of Lake Worth Trinity Christian (12) and Class 7A COY Jeremiah Klosterman of Nease (10).

All nine finalists led their teams to state titles.

The Florida Dairy Farmers High School Sports Awards program exemplifies Florida Dairy Farmers’ commitment to the state’s youth. This is the 25th year of these unique awards as we honor the state’s top athletes and coaches in all 30 FHSAA sanctioned and recognized sports. The program also emphasizes to young people the importance of keeping dairy products a primary part of their diet in their overall nutrition plan.
