What’s next: Union County would host Fort White or play at Lafayette in Tuesday’s regional final; Madison County will play at either school.
The visiting Cowboys, who moved down from Class 4A to 1A this school year, played in the 4A state final in 2013, losing to Miami Gulliver Prep. Madison has played mostly upper classification schools, except for their District 5-1A schedule, losing to Lafayette three times, including the district final. Union County, which last reached the state playoffs the only time the Tigers played in the state tournament in 2012, have won 11 straight games. They have the top hitter in the area in sophomore Teala Howard (.609, 12 RBIs), and two power hitters in Santa Fe College signee Kaylan Tucker (.455, 10 doubles, 5 triples, 3 homers, 41 RBIs) and junior Devin Lewis (.459, 13 doubles, 2 triples, 3 homers, 34 RBIs). Tucker is 7-1 as a pitcher (2.91 ERA) while sophomore Brooke Waters is 5-0 (1.86 ERA).
