Title: HS Softball – Gainesville at Forest (Ocala)

Event Details: Join Marty Pallman (Play-by-play) and Billy Barnette (Color) for this Alachua County vs. Marion County showdown.  This is the last regular season game for the nationally-ranked Hurricanes prior to next week’s district tournament.

Gainesville (20-2) was ranked 9th in the country by MaxPreps, but fell to 19th after a loss last weekend at the prestigious Kissimmee Klassic. They’ve only lost two games all season. One was to Orange Park Oakleaf, 2-1, which up until this past weekend was ranked No. 1 in the country. The other loss was to an Illinois state champion, also by one run, which happened to be the 33rd straight win for Downers Grove South (IL).

For GHS, ranked No. 1 in the state in Class 7A, the sting of losing in last year’s district semifinals has sparked this team. They face a Forest team toight that was nationally-ranked to begin the season. In fact, Forest (14-9) is the defending 6A state champion, now playing in 8A, but they’ve struggled this year. They’ve had a bullseye on their back all year, plus their pitcher Morgan White, who was the player of the year in Florida last year, has been injured. It’s likely the Florida Gulf Coast signee will throw tonight, likely against future Gator Katie Chronister.

GHS finished unbeaten in 7A-District 3 so they will be the #1 seed in next week’s district tournament and will face Middleburg, a team they beat twice by a combined 25 runs.  All they have to do is win that game to advance to the FHSAA state playoffs so we’ll know this time next week if Gainesville makes it in. Forest will also be a #1 seed in 8A-District 3.  GHS won the first meeting between the two, 4-0, on Feb. 26.
