2015 PREVIEW: Despite only winning one game last season, and three games total over the past three years, there is plenty of excitement and anticipation for 2015.

That’s because former Hawthorne star and Florida Gator Cornelius Ingram, whose brother Greg Bowie is the Hornets’ boys basketball coach, was hired as the team’s new football coach in December. The program felt an impact immediately.

Sophomore Devin Lawrence, a member of last year’s basketball state semifinalist team, will be one of the leaders this season on a team full of young guys. In fact, the only senior is quarterback Austin Roloff, a transfer from Santa Fe.

“I knew that going into the season (youth),” said Cornelius. “That is one of the reasons I wanted to coach. We want to be competitive.”

The key to being competitive could be more numbers. Last year, Hawthorne had just 17 players suited up. This year they could dress as many as 30.

“Our whole mindset was to get more guys to come out and play football,” added Cornelius “We led games at halftime but then we had a drop off in the second half because of a lack of depth.”

Hawthorne will compete in District 6-1A with Hilliard, Union County (Lake Butler), Fort White and Baldwin.
