Prep Zone Power Poll – 2014-15 Boys Basketball Poll #9

ProvidenceStallions a unanimous No. 1; Providence looks to go wire-to-wire

Gainesville – There was a little bit of a shakeup in the Prep Zone Power Poll following the first round of the FHSAA state playoffs last week.

Almost half (nine) of the top 20 teams had their season come to an end, while two top 10 teams lost.

Providence (Jacksonville) left no doubt who the top-ranked team in the poll is following a convincing 83-43 win over St. Francis (Gainesville) in the Region 1-3A quarterfinals. The Stallions (27-1), winners of 14 in a row and ranked No. 1 in Class 3A, was a unanimous selection as the top overall team.

Despite a narrow one-point win in the opening round and an overtime victory in the district title game, the top-ranked team in Class 6A remained second. Lake Minneola (24-4), which survived in overtime against previous No. 18 Vanguard (Ocala), 87-83, to win the 6A-District 6 title, edged previous No. 15 Seabreeze (Daytona Beach), 68-67, in a Region 2-6A quarterfinal.

Tonight, the Hawks will host Deltona, which moved up to fifth. The Wolves (22-4) eliminated Vanguard last Thursday, 51-33.

Jackson (Jacksonville) remained third, while Gainesville is still fourth.

The Tigers (25-3) defeated previous #14 Episcopal (Jacksonville), 52-34, in Region 1-4A and will host Ribault (Jacksonville), which is receiving votes in this week’s poll, in the regional semifinals.

The Purple Hurricanes (25-3) beat Pace at home, 62-52, in Region 1-6A to earn a game at the Purple Palace on Tuesday night against Pensacola in the regional semifinals. GHS is looking to advance to its fifth regional final in the past eight years.

Wolfson (Jacksonville) is ranked sixth, followed by Ed White (Jacksonville), who it will face in tonight’s 6A regional semifinal. Hawthorne, winners of 12 in a row, is ranked eighth, followed by Eustis and Trinity Catholic (Ocala), which moved up seven spots, in the top 10.

The regional finals are Friday for the 1A-4A classifications and Saturday (5A-8A). The state semifinals will begin next Tuesday at The Lakeland Center.
