West Port football preview

West Port_Wolf PackWest Port (Ocala) Wolf Pack (Class 8A-District 1)

2013 Record: 1-9

Head Coach: Matt Franklin (1st year)

Key Players: Quandre Woods (RB, Sr.), Markell Glover-Cornick (Slot, So.), Kameron Duncan (RB, So.), Marshall Waggener (MLB, Sr.), Armand Diaz (S, Sr.), Rickey McDuffie (WR, Sr.), Jean Valcius (FS, Sr.), Lyle Collier (OL, Sr.), John Eck (OL, Sr.), Jarrod Barkley (DL, Sr.), Kyree Jones (DL/OL, Jr.)

Outlook: The Wolf Pack have high expectations to bounce back from last year after both the JV and freshman programs had winning records. They will be going to a spread offense and a 3-3 defense that Franklin was a part of when he was an assistant coach at West Virginia.

West Port has some very good athletes, especially at the slot and running back position. In addition, they have a good WR in McDuffie (25 rec. 375 yards) who can stretch the field vertically. Woods could be one of the most underrated talents in Florida after averaging 6.5 ypc and scoring nine touchdowns running with two torn MCLs in 2013. He’s healthy now and could do a lot of damage in the new offense. Duncan ran for 96 yards on eight carries in the spring game. Junior Bobby Smith and senior Jordan Miller will battle for the QB spot.

The Wolf Pack will have a solid secondary and some good defensive team speed. Waggener, who is one of nine starters returning on defense, led the team in tackles with 109, while Diaz finished second with 98. Barkley and Jones will anchor the defensive line.
